    I don't think Mark's a numpty when the Goodliffing of cells goes bad. (Not just the 12 placed in r3c5 instead of 34, he also placed a 3 into r7c4 earlier instead of a six.) I think the rules of the puzzle are so tightly packed together it's easy to confuse them. So many 5 and 15 cages in combination with the knights' move. Having the black kropki's next to the whites.

    57:58 very cool puzzle, only got stuck once but found a labeling method that continued the puzzle. scanning for the knightmare constraint isn't too hard if you use one color for each of 14, 23, 69, 78, and 5 (by itself).

    Rare that I'm much quicker than Mark but did this in 23:26 by colouring the 15 & 5 cages to start with. Then concentrated on the knights move restriction and normal Sudoku logic to fill most of the grid. I found all the 5's that way before anything else. By the time I'd ran through the black dot possibilities, the colouring gave the 8 in box 7 and it was not far off from filling all of each digits cells in one go using the colouring. Also never even needed the 25 cage clue. The colouring filled that in for me.

    Wait are you a fan of The Wheel of Time? Shieldmaiden is a reference to Norse mythology, but was also used in the epic saga from Robert Jordan. I read the first 9 books something like 3 times. When I reached the end, just read it again. Until the 10th book where wheels started to fall off, and the author was trying to find a way to end the entangled mess they created.

    This is a record for me; successfully completing a puzzle that Simon took 80 minutes to solve. Mind you, it took me 4 attempts (and a few days). Nearly gave up on the forth go when I saw a familiar contradiction but I noticed an assumption was wrong and I was able to complete it. As complex puzzles go I liked it because I always felt like I was making progress, even it it took a long time.

    14:10 I'll admit that I found this puzzle rather grizzly. I also await with bated breath for an unwarranted assumption about R7C3 to bite him in the BEEhind. 15:40 I'm glad he found his mistake early, although I would have had a certain amount of Schadenfreude had the puzzle crashed. But no biting this time. 38:20 I see a knightmare move violation in R6C3 and R8C4. I don't remember when it happened.

  • @stevesebzda570
    @stevesebzda570 День назад

    @24:31 Mark: "Now, do I know how those two go?" Yes, Mark. You mentioning those two 15 cages had to be different. (Because, you can't squeeze both digits into r3c3) So, that's a 78 pair in there. Now, r5c3 is 69 (with a 78 on the other side). But, that "8" in box7 sees that 7 in box5. So, they're 98 across that dot. The "9" now can't have a 6 a knight's move away in that 69 cage in box7. Oh, and 67 on the other dot in row5. Yes, you know, Mark. Look in the back of your brain, lol. (kidding ) Mark knows, though.. 😅

    Another way to starts with, the mushroom rule. There are only 5 boxes which have mushrooms. i.e. the biggest digit of a mushroom is 5. There are 10 mushrooms, so the digit combinations of mushrooms will be 5s, 4s, 1s OR 5s, 3s, 2s. There must be mushrooms of 5s. Box 6 has only 1 mushroom, therefore it must be a 5, or else there will not be enough boxes for mushroom 5s.

  • @RealCadde
    @RealCadde День назад

    "If i put seven in a mushroom ... bla bla bla bla bla" Could you at least use a valid example? There are 10 mushrooms in five boxes. So the biggest value in a mushroom is a five. There are two mushrooms in three boxes. And three mushrooms in one box. If five existed in any mushroom, then one mushroom in every box would have a five in it. Meaning there's now one mushroom left in boxes 1-3. And two in box 4. You only have two unique digits left to play with that have to be able to cover four boxes. You could put a 1 on a mushroom in box four and a 4 on all the remaining mushrooms. Or you could put a 2 and 3 on mushrooms. If 5 is NOT on a mushroom, you now have to cover 10 mushrooms with digits lower than 5. One of them could be a 4, so you have 6 mushrooms left. One of them could be a 3, so you have 3 mushrooms left and one can be a 2 so you have 1 mushroom left which would have to be a 1. In either case, the sum of the digits used is 10. 5+1+4 = 10 5+2+3 = 10 4+3+2+1 = 10 Mushrooms in rows 1 are not the same as each other, the same for row 2. And obviously the same in row 3 as they are in the same box as well. But those two could be the same as row 1 and 2 respectively. Mushrooms in column 2 and 8 are not the same respectively either. As you already have a 456 triple in row 4, the mushroom at R4C1 cannot be a 4 or 5. So it's from the digits 123. And because of the layout of the mushrooms seeing other mushrooms in rows and columns, if there's a 5 on mushrooms there's a locked pattern where 5's can exist in mushrooms. R6C1 would have to be one of those fives. And obviously R5C8 would be a 5, or you won't have enough boxes to put 5's on mushrooms. If i were to guess, you'd run into serious trouble in box four if a 5 wasn't on a mushroom. As you would have to use three low digits (out of 1234) on mushrooms. You need AT LEAST two low digits on the part of the centipede that makes a deep turn inside box 4. Therefore you cannot have used three of the lows on mushrooms. My conjecture is that there is a 5 on mushrooms, and we know where four of those 5's go.

    Thank you Mark!!! What a pleasure to see this video. Your logic was excellent, and somehow you deduced the 1234/6789 combos on the outer white dots WAY faster than I had ever spotted myself. I had been working on another puzzle many months ago, and I spotted a very interesting pattern that I put aside to explore. When I came back to it, I was able to place the 5/15 cages fairly easily, but placing the Kropki dots proved to be a significant challenge, I'd say I went through at least 50 iterations - but once I got this down, I knew it was a good puzzle! Congrats on the 600K milestone, and apologies for the error in the other puzzle. Glad we got that resolved 😶

    No question about it, the Knightmare rule is a very difficult one to scan for, and even to remember to apply within a box. I think you did fantastic to make so few errors in your solve, Mark. I actually tried the puzzle for a little bit before watching the video and got a glimmer of what had to be going on with the 5-cages and the 15-cages - but then gave up in favor of watching your video. Thanks so much, and continued congratulations on the 600,000 subscribers. You and Simon are so deserving, you are both so brilliant and so charming, and have created a lovely community.

    definitely one of my favorite puzzles, and right in my personal sweet spot. Intricate enough to have to put some real thought in and struggle at times - but a very clear solve path, very linear, and can confidently do within a reasonable timeframe of procrastinating my actual life. Obviously personal and different for everyone - but when I decide if I'm going to do a puzzle or not, it's an automatic if it's 1) between 25 and 55 minutes 2) got some amount of lines, renbens, boxes or similar stuff - basically using the simple classic clues but in interesting geometric ways I wish sinclair would release more slightly tougher material in artisinal sudoku. I really like his construction (and he does have some more complex stuff on LMG) - but I find even the 9/10s on artisinal fall more in the 25min CTC vid category (although plenty of gems like this on in there as well).

    The way I ended up solving this was to write the letters "ABCD" for 1234 and "EFGH" for 6789, which was a technique used to solve a sudoku on this channel several years ago. Its effectively solving all the symmetric variants of the puzzle simultaneously , until that symmetry is broken by the black kropki dots at the end of the solve. I think my first proper digit was the 5 in box 8, but it was about halfway through the solve instead of near the beginning.
